National Relief Committee receives more funds for Haiti

Minister Manickchand receives donation from a Representative of Kaieteur News.Minister of Human Services and Social Security and Chairperson of the National Committee for Haiti Relief Priya Manickchand updated the media on the status of the Committee at another donation ceremony today, which was held at the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) Office, Thomas Lands.

She mentioned that a total of 19 containers were sent to Haiti and another is being packed to leave tomorrow. The approximate funds garnered by the Committee as of February 12, exceeded $264.4 M. In addition, in excess of $50 M has been donated in kind so far.

 

At today’s presentation, the Committee received an undisclosed donation from the staff of Courts Guyana Inc. Courts also formed a mother-committee, which made accommodations in its branches for any contributions that could be made by other corporations and citizens. They were successful since they received 15 boxes of shoes from Colors and a total of $ 1.4 M in mattresses.

 

In addition, the Guyana Rastafarian Community and Council held a concert to raise funds for Haiti and donated $70, 000. Kaieteur News donated a total of $4,515,826 while a representative of Women Reaching Out, Patrice Gordon, donated $ 200,000.

 

Minister Manickchand thanked the contributors for their thoughts and innovative means of responding to the devastating earthquake that took place in Haiti on January 12.
Guyana was rated the most generous country in the world by the Relief Web, Guardian Datablog, based on the large amount of contributions provided by the Government and citizens of the country.
