Finance Minister hands over Government’s US$1M donation to Haiti relief

AS Government leads the national effort to help the victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti, Minister of Finance Dr. Ashni Singh yesterday handed over a cheque for US$1M (G$205M) to Chairperson of the multi-stakeholder committee established, Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Ms. Priya Manikchand.

Gov’t pledges US$1M in Haiti relief

Guyana has pledged US$1 million in assistance to Haiti following the major earthquake that struck the Caribbean nation on Tuesday.

President Bharrat Jagdeo made the announcement in a statement yesterday and later met with political parties, religious organisations and non-governmental organizations to coordinate a national response to aid in recovery efforts. Minister of Human Services, Priya Manickchand has been named chair of the multi-stakeholder committee.

CDC receives equipment from US military

Georgetown, GINA, September 17, 2009
Director General, CDC, Chabilall Ramsarup and Lt. Col. Melba Hernandez, Military Liaison Officer , US Embassy at the handing over ceremony, CDC Headquarters, Thomas LandsTo evaluate the effectiveness of integrated technologies and to improve Guyana’s capacity to respond to natural disasters, the United States Southern Command (US SOUTHCOM) earlier today donated first aid emergency equipment to the Guyana Civil Defence Commission (CDC). The handing-over ceremony took place at CDC’s headquarters, Thomas Lands.

Director-General of CDC, Chabilall Ramsarup received the donation on behalf of the Government.
“We would like to thank the US SOUTHCOM for the presentation since it would go a far way in assisting us to respond promptly to natural disasters’.”
Lt. Col. Melba Hernandez, Military Liaison Officer , US Embassy handed-over the items to Ramsarup.

Civil defence body to use computers in tracking floods

The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) is combining hydrology, hydraulics and computer technology in its latest training session to generate data about flooding and mitigating its effects.

The session started on Tuesday and will continue until July 13, a press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said. The session is being held jointly by the CDC, the US Southern Command and the US Army Corps of Engineers.
