DISASTER PREPAREDNESS CRITICAL IN ECONOMIC COMPETITIVENESS : S-G CARRINGTON

  (CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) In an era when developed and developing nations did not prioritise asymmetry in new trading arrangements, economic competitiveness and disaster preparedness were essential for the Caribbean Region, said His Excellency Edwin Carrington.
The Secretary-General of the Caribbean Forum of African Caribbean and Pacific States (CARIFORUM) was at the time speaking at the commissioning of a Doppler radar weather system on March 31, in Brasso Venado, Trinidad and Tobago.

CDC spearheads formation of draft flood preparedness plan

In the quest to put in place a National Flood Preparedness and Response Plan, the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) yesterday commenced an intense and interactive session with several stakeholder organisations at the Regency Hotel, Hadfield Street, Georgetown.

The venture, according to Deputy Director General of the CDC, Lieutenant Colonel Francis Abraham, comes as part of Government’s collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to build both national and local capacity in disaster risk reduction and response. And since the CDC has been bestowed with the mandate to manage emergencies and disasters in Guyana, the preparedness project will be undertaken under its auspices with funding from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

ESRI approves $40M GIS software for Guyana

Georgetown, GINA, February 9, 2010

Minister of Agriculture Robert Persaud who is currently attending a meeting in California, United States of America, to discuss how Geographical Information System (GIS) can be used as a tool to support the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) and Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) has managed to garner the approval for a $40M state-of-the-art GIS software from the Environmental Systems Research Institute ( ESRI) and the University of Redlands.

CDC to table draft disaster plan to government by Friday

Several government and other stakeholder agencies are participating in a two-day workshop to prepare a draft disaster plan for government.

The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) is working to produce a draft plan on how to better tackle disaster situations and government may study the proposal for approval as early as Friday.

Yesterday, several key organizations listed as being critical players met at the Regency Suites in a two-day workshop to identify future actions in developing and implementing a National Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (DANA).
CDC, the government’s disaster management agency is moving to design a readiness system that will allow emergency workers to report from troubled areas using their laptops and Blackberries.
